Zone Presence

Zone presence is a low-accuracy location job. It answers whether a tagged person, vehicle, or load is in a named wing of the building, a large hall section often on the order of about 2,000 m² (~21,500 ft²), or whether it passed a gate or chokepoint. Industry RTLS material often calls the same idea symbolic locating or choke-point coverage. The system reports presence in an area. It does not report a continuous aisle or bay coordinate.

Plants buy zone presence when the decision is still on-site, still in this building, or crossed this door. That is enough for crude site utilization and some security or handoff events. It is not enough for free-truck claim, missing-cage find in a supermarket lane, or buffer dwell by bay. Those jobs need medium-precision location around 1–3 m (3–10 ft).

Do not treat zone presence as a synonym for 1–3 m (3–10 ft). That band is medium precision. Brochures that call aisle-grade track zone-level mix the two buys and set RFPs up to fail.

Key Components

Named area or portal - A wing, hall section, dock door, or choke line that operations already understand.

Presence event - Entered, still inside, or crossed, without a free-space path after the read.

Coverage design - Readers or anchors placed for area or gate detection, not for aisle trilateration.

Downstream systems - Optional handoff into WMS, MES, or a twin so the event becomes a record.

Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics

Receiving and shipping use gate presence to confirm a load crossed the dock line. Large campuses use wing presence to prove a truck is still in a building without walking the roof. Security and visitor programs use chokepoints to log who entered a restricted wing. None of those installs automatically deliver aisle search for internal logistics. How the two accuracy jobs differ is under zone presence vs medium-precision logistics track.

Benefits and Challenges

The benefit is lower infrastructure density when the question is truly coarse. The challenge is writing RFPs that say location and then accept wing presence as success. Ops still walks the buffer when the dashboard only shows north wing. Outdoor yard GPS versus indoor hall track is a related scope split, not a fix for missing aisle precision indoors.

Related Terms

Medium-precision location, RTLS, geofencing, RFID gate reads, and indoor positioning sit next to this term. Exact floor position is a third, tighter job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is zone presence the same as 1–3 m (3–10 ft) accuracy? No. Zone presence is wing, large section, or chokepoint presence. About 1–3 m (3–10 ft) is medium precision for aisle and bay work.

Can a no-go zone run on zone presence alone? Only if the restricted area is itself a large wing or gate. Many aisle-scale no-go zones need medium precision.

Does a gate RFID portal give zone presence? A portal gives presence at a line. That is the same accuracy class as coarse presence, not a continuous logistics track after the door.

When should we upgrade from zone presence? When the shift question names an aisle, bay, or buffer, not only a building wing.
