Withdrawal Kanban

A withdrawal kanban is the conveyance signal in a classic kanban pull loop. It authorizes a material handler to take a defined part and quantity from a supermarket (or other upstream store) to a downstream process. Its counterpart is the production kanban, which authorizes the upstream process to make a replacement container after a full unit leaves the supermarket.

In the usual cycle, consumption at the station frees the withdrawal card when a container empties. The handler collects that card together with the empty container, exchanges the card onto a full container at the supermarket, and delivers the full unit downstream. The detached production kanban left at the supermarket tells upstream to replenish. Lean references treat empty-container return as part of that exchange. When empties pile at the line instead of returning, the loop runs short of containers and pull breaks even if full-material buttons still work.

Plants care because withdrawal discipline is where full replenishment and empty return share one operating rule. Digital e-Kanban and material call-off tools can carry the same idea without paper cards, but only if empty remove is a real logistics job, not a courtesy after the full drop.

Key Components

Conveyance authorization: Permission to move one container (or defined quantity) to a named destination, not a free-form radio ask.

Empty + card collect: The handler returns the empty with the freed withdrawal signal so supermarket stock and packaging stay in the loop.

Supermarket exchange: At the store, the withdrawal signal attaches to a full container and the production signal detaches for upstream replenishment.

Closed packaging loop: Empties and returnable packaging must re-enter the supermarket or wash path, or inventory management loses physical units even when part numbers look healthy in software.

Digital equivalents: Buttons, scans, and e-Kanban flips that open claimable empty-remove or bring jobs in a forklift guidance system or twinzo AOS.

Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics

High-volume assembly uses withdrawal kanban (paper or electronic) for supermarket-to-line tote and trolley feed on milk-run tours. Direct forklift empty removes cover pallet-size or irregular returns that cannot wait for the next planned lap. Continuous improvement reviews aged empties beside full-material response time because both sit on the same pull loop.

When movers are tracked, closed empty-return jobs feed the same hall record as loaded brings, so teams can review return paths without inventing a second process. Product setup for claimable empties sits under material order automation.

Benefits and Challenges

The benefit is a single pull rule: nothing moves without authorization, and empties return with the signal so packaging and upstream capacity stay available. The challenge is discipline. Informal empty pickup breaks the loop as surely as unauthorized full moves. Mixing milk-run empty collect with irregular pallet empties in one vehicle pool also hides which stage owns the return.

Related Terms

Kanban is the wider method. e-Kanban is the digital signal form. Supermarket is the usual store for the exchange. Material call-off is the station demand event. Milk-run orders vs direct forklift orders separates tour collect from pallet empty remove. Returnable packaging is the physical unit that must cycle back. Lean manufacturing frames the pull rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a withdrawal kanban the same as a production kanban? No. Withdrawal authorizes move to the consumer. Production authorizes make at the supplier process after a full unit leaves the supermarket.

Must empties always ride with the card? In classic supermarket pull, yes: the handler collects the empty with the freed withdrawal signal. Digital call-offs keep the same operating idea when empty remove is a named job.

Does every milk run replace withdrawal kanban? No. A milk-run lap can carry empties on the return leg as planned collect. Irregular or pallet-size empties often need a separate forklift call-off.

Where does twinzo put this? As request types and templates inside AOS under material order automation, including empty-remove shapes beside full bring jobs.
