Medium-Precision Location

Medium-precision location is the accuracy band around 1–3 m (3–10 ft). In plant language it answers which aisle, bay, or buffer holds a tagged mover or load. For most search, utilization, empty-path, shared-aisle, and many no-go zone jobs, that band is already precise. The last few meters (yards) of a find can still finish on foot.

It is not zone presence. Zone presence only needs wing, large hall section, or chokepoint answers, often on the order of about 2,000 m² (~21,500 ft²). It is also not exact floor position. Sub-meter (~3 ft) or tighter readings matter when near the mark is not on the mark, such as a dock face or a tight safety cell. Never call 1–3 m (3–10 ft) zone-level. That label belongs to the coarse job, not the aisle track.

Plants usually reach this band with a surveyed real-time location system (RTLS) layout, often BLE for hall logistics, with other radios chosen when the decision demands them. The decision page is zone presence vs medium-precision logistics track.

Key Components

Accuracy target - A written requirement near 1–3 m (3–10 ft) for the aisles that matter, not a vague location line item.

Coverage on searched corridors - Anchors or gateways dense enough that bay and buffer reads hold during the shift.

Trusted hall map - A layout where a location means a real bay, not a bare coordinate.

Stored place-and-time record - Positions kept in a spatially oriented dataset so dwell, heat, and later analytics can reuse the same stream.

Applications in Manufacturing and Logistics

Forklift tracking, free-truck claim, missing-cage search, buffer dwell, and industrial fleet heat maps typically start here. Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement teams use the same band for live path evidence without buying hall-wide exact floor position. twinzo logistics work on an operational digital twin usually sits in this band, with live views feeding internal logistics optimization and stored places feeding correlation and causality analytics.

Benefits and Challenges

The benefit is matching spend to the aisle decision most shifts actually enforce. The challenge is vendor language that sells 1–3 m (3–10 ft) as zone-level, or that prices sub-meter everywhere when medium precision already settles the job. Coverage still has to sit on the corridors you search. Wing-only installs fail the same success test even when the radio family is correct on paper.

Related Terms

Zone presence, RTLS, BLE, asset tracking, forklift tracking, and indoor positioning sit next to this term. Exact floor position is the tighter peer when the mark itself is the decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is medium precision zone-level location? No. Zone presence is the coarse wing or chokepoint job. Medium precision is about 1–3 m (3–10 ft) for aisle and bay work.

Do no-go zones require sub-meter accuracy? Not always. Many no-go zones work at medium precision when aisle-scale presence is enough.

Is this only a BLE number? No. Medium precision names the decision band. Different radios can land in it. Pick the radio after you write the metre (foot) question.

When do we need something tighter? When the job is exact floor position on a mark, not aisle find or fleet load.
